In the early days of walking with friends with dogs on mountain paths and beaches there was an unspoken understanding that dogs were like small horses, they kak in front of you and it’s not a topic of polite conversation although it’s happening in plain sight.
This oversight was altered for me when I walked with a friend and my dogs squatted in the path ahead of us. Without saying a word, she picked up a stick and flicked it into the bush. How enlightened I thought. I too would evolve into a fit and proper person and flick my dog’s-kak into the bushes. People would see this and think I was considerate.
On numerous walks I see stick flickers everywhere, they know it’s not right to let your dog ablute in the path (someone might stand on it) so they do the right thing and flick it off the path and think no more of it. Afterall its entirely impractical to scoop up your doggie doodoos on a circular mountain path – what are you supposed to do with it?
Stick flicking must be the answer, although deep down inside I would bet that most people would recognize its not ideal to leave animal waste on their walks, but HEY at least they have done something!
